Vocabulary for Unit 1

Vocabulary Unit 1, Week 1
1. compressions-        acts or processes of compressing, or squeezing together
2. grumbled-               complained in a bad-tempered way
3. insistently-              repeatedly, steadily
4. intentionally-          something planned and carried out on purpose
5. minute-                   a short period of time; 60 seconds long
6. neutral-                   describes the position of gears when they do not transmit motion from the engine to the wheels or other working parts

7. normally-                usually or regularly

Vocabulary Unit 1, Week 2
1. branded-          marked by burning an animal’s skin with a hot iron
2. constructed-    put together, fitted together, or built
3. daintily-           to do something with delicate beauty
4. devastation-     complete destruction
5. lullaby-            a soft song usually sung to a child
6. pitch-               a thick, black, sticky substance made from tar or turpentine
7. resourceful-     a person who is good at thinking of ways to do things
8. thieving-                   stealing
9. veins-              the blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from all parts of the body

Vocabulary Unit 1, Week 3
1. gnawed-       something that has been bitten at until it wears away
2. headland-     a narrow ridge of high land jutting out into water
3. kelp-             refers to any of various large, tough, brown seaweeds
4. lair-              the den or resting place of a wild animal
5. ravine-          a long, deep, narrow valley eroded by running water
6. shellfish-      water animals with shells, such as oysters, clams, crabs, and lobsters
7. sinew-           a tendon

Vocabulary Unit 1, Week 4
1. confidence-    firm belief in yourself
2. fastball-         a pitch thrown at high speed with very little curve
3. mocking-        something done in a way that laughs at or makes fun of someone
4. outfield-         the part of a baseball field beyond the bases
5. unique- the only one of its kind or is rare and remarkable
6. weakness-     a weak point or a slight fault
7. windup-          a swinging movement of the arms while twisting the body just before pitching the ball

Vocabulary Unit 1, Week 5
1. barren-      not able to produce much
2. deafening- stunning with noise or making deaf
3. lurched-     staggered, leaned, or rolled suddenly
4. previous-   coming or being before; earlier
5. prying-       moving or forcing open with a lever
6. surveying- tools used to survey, or measure, land and determine its area
